Our story

We built the tool
we always wished existed.

MedPlan started with a renewal letter and a simple question: are we still on the right plan?

Like most families in Ireland, we've been health insurance customers for as long as we can remember. First policy, late twenties, one plan, straightforward enough. Then the family grew. Partner. Kids. Ageing parents who needed more from their cover. And every single year, without fail, the renewal letter arrived with a number that was higher than the year before and plan benefits that seemed subtly different from the ones we thought we were on.

We'd sit down at the kitchen table, open the laptop, and try to compare. Four insurers. Three hundred and forty plans. Benefit tables that span twelve pages. Co-payments buried in footnotes. "Semi-private in a hi-tech hospital" versus "private in a contracted facility". It is language that feels deliberately designed to make your eyes glaze over.

The insurers aren't doing anything wrong. But the complexity is not an accident. New plans are launched every year — not always because they offer something genuinely new, but because a fresh name and benefit remix resets the comparison clock. Older plans quietly absorb price increases. Features get split, renamed, rebundled. The effect is that the average family ends up staying on the old one not because their plan is the best option, but because working out whether it is has become too exhausting.

The number that stopped us in our tracks

Research published by the HIA found that a significant proportion of policyholders are on plans that cost hundreds of euros more per year than a comparable alternative. Not because the cheaper plan is worse — in many cases it's better. Simply because no one had the time to find it.

That's the problem MedPlan was built to solve. Not to replace your insurer, not to act as a broker, and not to push you towards any particular provider. Just to cut through the noise — to take every active plan on the Irish market, score it honestly against what actually matters to you, and show you clearly where you stand.

The engine underneath MedPlan pulls together data from the insurers and HIA's openpublic records and maps it against a scoring model you can tune yourself. Tell us you're planning a family and maternity cover moves up the rankings. Tell us you're primarily worried about access to private hospitals for serious procedures and the model weights that accordingly. The result is a comparison that is tailored to reflect your life, not a generic average.

We're not affiliated with any insurer. We also have a genuine belief that consumers deserve better tools — and a family that's now on a plan that costs less and covers more than the one we were on for the previous four years.

If that sounds useful, run the comparison. It takes about two minutes. You might be surprised what you find.
